Cufflinks: A Symbol of Elegance and Style
For centuries, cufflinks have been worn by discerning men of status. It is fascinating how this small but intricate detail possesses the power to turn a simple attire into a fashion statement. Cufflinks epitomize elegance and poise. Since their invention, cufflinks have been associated with luxury. While menswear has gone through its own share of changes, even today, there are some formal events that are just not complete without a pair of statement cufflinks for men. From a wedding to a graduation ceremony, today cufflinks are used as symbolic gifts to commemorate special days.
But how and when did cufflinks become such an integral part of men’s formal collection? How have cufflinks for men evolved over time?
Let us find out.
The history of cufflinks for men
The story of cufflinks started way back in the 17th century. Around the 13th century, men used ribbons, ties, and strings to hold their shirt cuffs together. In the years that followed, the stitched buttonhole was invented. Fashionable gentlemen quickly moved on from cloth as cufflinks and were seen using a pair of ornamental buttons to fasten their cuffs. These decorative buttons were often painted with a striking miniature portrait of their loved ones or a notable public figure and held together by a small chain.
Of course, with time, men’s shirts and fashion evolved, as did their cuffs. That is when the earliest versions of what we know as cufflinks today, emerged. It was popularized by King Charles II, a man known for his sharp intellect and impeccable attire. By frequently wearing cufflinks in public gatherings, King Charles II influenced the people’s opinion on these elegant men’s accessories.
Cufflinks soon became the accessory of choice for fashion conscious men across Europe’s noble and wealthier societies. By the 18th century, cufflinks were worn commonly by royalty, the nobles used them at regal occasions and special events. Much like men of taste today. With time, as shirts became more adventurous, making their way into the everyday lives of men, cufflinks also started becoming more widely accepted.
By the mid 1800s, the demand for cufflinks saw a monumental increase. It was during this time, after the start of the industrial revolution that there was a massive increase in the manufacturing of cufflinks. In 1876, George Krementz, a German immigrant was so inspired by the manufacturing process of bullets that he replicated it to produce cufflinks in massive numbers. This rise in production was a strong sign that cufflinks for men, while still exclusive, were no longer restricted to the rich and wealthy. Like most of the jewellery in the Victorian period, cufflinks’ designs were more extravagant. Soon after, cufflinks took on a more familiar form delicate gold, silver, or pearl buttons held close by a brass chain. These cufflinks were adorned by both men and women. This particular design of cufflinks came to be known as the ‘Victorian serpent’.
By the end of the 20th century men’s shirts were being designed with buttons already on the cuff. This design was, no doubt, functional but it decreased the use of cufflinks. The 1960s and 70s were a lean period for cufflinks. Fortunately, this was short lived. As men’s fashion began changing again, with a heavy French influence, the French cuff (or double cuff) made its way to England. This led to the rebirth of cufflinks.
The modern cufflinks that we know today were created in 1924. A new, functional, yet fashionable cufflink that was designed with the intent of making cufflinks for men easier to wear and fasten onto cuffs. Across the world, this style of cufflinks remains the most popular.

- Fixed back cufflinks: Also known as stud/button cufflinks, these unique designs have no moving part in their design. They may be a tad more difficult to adjust through the buttonhole than other designs, but this trait also makes these cufflinks more secure. More often than not, both ends are made of the same material and have the same design. How is one to use it? Simply tilt the smaller end of the cufflink and then straighten.
- Locking cufflinks: More suited to the modern day aesthetic, this cufflink works like a hinge and is fastened with the help of a locking style similar to that of a wristwatch. The locking cufflinks come with a dual locking system and a new age design.
