Wallets
Overflowing wallets protruding out of back pockets are neither attractive nor stylish. If you are the type that carries a ton of stuff, use a money clip for cash.
Go for classics over trendy and make sure you buy an expensive one. Shabby wallets scream cheap date.
Sporty wallets are for the under 25s. Stop trying to relive your youth through your wallet.
Business cards need a business card holder. Since bulges in the wrong places are ugly and you business cards make your wallet lose shape, it’s a worthwhile investment.
Snakeskin wallets are for sleazy nightclub owners. As are wallets with buckles and zips.
You can never go wrong with a classic wallet in black and tan with an interesting lining.
Don’t pretend you are beyond the change carrying stage if you aren’t. Pick one with a change pocket or you will find pennies dropping all the time and it’s not because you got the joke.
Belts
Your belt color should be coordinated with your footwear and suit - black with black, brown with brown.
It's also important that your belt buckle matches the other accessories in your ensemble, so wear a silver belt buckle with accessories in the same color "family," like platinum, stainless steel or white gold.
A wider belt should be worn with jeans, if you opt to wear a belt at all. The belt can either be leather (regular leather, suede, nubuck, or pebble grain -- all of which look great with denim, tweed and wool), or cotton (canvas included). And never wear a thin belt with your jeans - leave that to the ladies.
A thin belt looks great for a formal event or even when dressed up for a night out. Wear a thin belt with dress pants, and a thicker belt with flat-front pants, 5-pocket pants, jeans, and even with a suit.
Those old-school belt buckles are a thing of the past, but that doesn't mean that belt buckles are no longer cool. "Seat belt-style" belts have been around for a few years now, where the "buckle" is a seat belt buckle and the belt is basically a seat belt.
Now that you know some general rules concerning belts, here are some things to avoid at all costs:
- Wearing a belt with pants that have no belt loops.
- Wearing a belt and suspenders at the same time.
- Wearing a thin belt with jeans or cords.
- Wearing a belt that's too short for you. A belt that's slightly longer will make you look slimmer, as using the last hole on your belt will make your gut seem more apparent.
